How My Hustle Broke Me—and What It Took to Heal
I was nineteen when I first clocked into a factory in Newark, New Jersey. The air was thick with the smell of metal and sweat, and the machines hummed like a second heartbeat. I was an immigrant girl from the Dominican Republic chasing the American Dream — one that promised security, status, and a better life for my family. What I didn’t realize then was that the very hustle driving me forward was also slowly breaking me down.
The Cost of the Climb
For years, I lived by a single mantra: work harder. I took every overtime shift I could, attended school at night, and dreamed of escaping the factory floor. I wanted to make something of myself — to rise, to matter. And in many ways, I did. But success came at a cost.
By the age of twenty-eight, I was the proud holder of a college degree and a social impact job. I had made it out of the factory and into an office with air conditioning and benefits. But beneath the polished exterior, my body was paying the price.
That year, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and uterine fibroids. I was also struggling with obesity, inflammation, and exhaustion. My body was screaming for rest, but I had no idea how to listen. I told myself it was just stress — that I could fix it later, after the next promotion, the next degree, the next milestone.
The truth? I was running my body like a broken machine. I was feeding it poorly, sleeping less than five hours a night, and treating self-care like a luxury for people with time to waste. My mind was winning, but my body was losing.
When the Body Says “Enough”
I continued to push — through graduate school at Columbia University, through long nights writing policy papers and early mornings managing teams. I wore my exhaustion like a badge of honor. I was an immigrant success story. I was unstoppable.
Until I wasn’t.
At age forty-one, already a middle manager in municipal government, my body stopped me in the most dramatic way possible: I suffered a brain aneurysm.
One moment, I was leading meetings and supporting teams; the next, I was on a hospital bed, surrounded by machines again — this time as the patient, not the worker. The irony was not lost on me. The girl who had once fought her way out of the factory now had to fight for her own life.
That aneurysm was my body’s final alarm. It was the moment I realized that ambition without wellness isn’t sustainable — it’s self-destruction dressed up as success.
The Turning Point
Recovery forced me to slow down — something I had never done willingly. I learned to rebuild my body, to breathe, to move with intention, to eat for nourishment rather than numbing. I stopped treating my body as a vehicle to carry my goals and started honoring it as the foundation for everything I wanted to achieve.
Over time, the inflammation subsided. The brain fog lifted. The energy came back — not the frantic kind I once lived on, but a deep, grounded vitality. I lost weight, yes, but more importantly, I gained something far greater: peace, strength, and joy.
My passion for wellness led me to study nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle medicine, eventually becoming certified as a Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and Lifestyle & Wellness Coach through Harvard and ISSA.
Health, Ambition, and Success: A Powerful Trio
Today, as a senior executive in the social impact sector, I’ve learned that wellness, ambition, and success aren’t opposing forces — they are exponential partners. When one rises, the others follow.
My career has flourished since I began prioritizing my health. I’m sharper, more creative, and more compassionate. I lead with clarity and calm. I have the stamina to build big things — but also the wisdom to rest when needed. I’ve learned that true leadership begins with self-leadership.
This transformation is why I founded BEA Healthier — a wellness and performance community for high-achieving women who want to thrive without burning out. It’s my way of helping others rewrite the narrative I once lived — the one that equates success with self-sacrifice.
The Myth of the Endless Hustle
Many of us, especially immigrants and high achievers, are taught that hard work is the only path to success. We push through pain, pride ourselves on productivity, and ignore the whispers of fatigue until they become screams. We believe we can’t slow down because everything — our career, our family, our future — depends on us.
But here’s what I’ve learned: the hustle without healing is hollow. When you sacrifice your body for your goals, you end up with achievements you can’t even enjoy. And when you finally do stop — whether by choice or by crisis — you realize how fragile it all was.
Health is not a distraction from success. It is the engine that powers it.
Building a Life of Health and Joy
Today, my life feels like something I once thought only other people could have — vibrant energy, emotional stability, physical strength, and a sense of joy that runs deeper than circumstance. I still work hard. I’m still ambitious. But now, I hustle with alignment instead of adrenaline.
I build time for movement into my days, not as punishment, but as gratitude. I eat food that loves me back. I prioritize sleep and connection. I invest in my body as much as I invest in my career.
And the result? My impact has grown, my career has expanded, and my joy has multiplied. I am living proof that you don’t have to choose between ambition and wellness — you just have to design your life differently.
